Supporting the Barista Open 2026: What to Know

Supporting the Barista Open 2026: What to Know

We’re proud to announce that we are a sponsor for this year's Aotearoa Barista Champs and Barista Open events.

Run by the team at the New Zealand Specialty Coffee Association, the Barista Open is a fast-paced, head-to-head knockout competition designed to get more people competing, bring more regions into the mix, and grow the coffee community.

At its core, the Barista Open is about backing new and emerging competitors, helping them step forward, build confidence, and tap into the support the NZSCA community offers as they begin their competition journey.

Where are the Barista Open events for 2026?

There are five Barista Open events happening across New Zealand.

How do the competitions work?

Two baristas compete at a time. One progresses. The rounds are short, clear, and easy to follow.

Each match includes:

A one-minute introduction where baristas can show personality and connect with the crowd.

A three-minute dial-in and setup.

A five-minute beverage round serving espresso, dairy milk, and alternative milk.

A one-minute clean-down, just like real service

Judging is done side by side, with a focus on taste, presentation, and overall experience rather than lengthy technical scoring sheets. The winner earns a spot at the Aotearoa Barista Champs 2026.
