Hi Kate! Firstly, can you tell me a bit about Posh Porridge and how it all started?
The idea for Posh Porridge really came from identifying a gap in the market for delicious, healthy and local breakfast foods beyond the regular contenders you're used to seeing at markets and events. Rebecca Elkins first started selling porridge at the Christchurch Farmers Market in 2010 and teamed up with her cousin Caroline Strack in 2015 to create the mouth-watering breakfast bowls many Cantabrians have come to know and love! Now 14 years later we're under the guidance of her close friend Olivia Burtt and still selling at the market every weekend, rain or shine!
You have so many delicious flavours available, what do you think is the key to creating the perfect porridge?
We think the perfect porridge is a mixture of eclectic, comforting flavour and a little new-school ingenuity! Each month the senior team gets together to brainstorm our new monthly menus, based on both what seasonal produce we see available and flavour combinations we've noticed are gaining popularity. We bounce ideas off each other until we land on a flavour combination that really encompasses the values and spirit of Posh Porridge, and one we think our customers will love.
.
We love that you are a decent customer! What made you decide to use our sustainable packaging?
We go through so many bowls each week (upwards of 500!), we just didn't want to be contributing that much waste to landfill and compostable packaging just seemed like a perfect solution. It suits our business perfectly, having everything from lids to spoons be compostable, and the surprise on our customers faces when we tell them all of their waste can all go in the compost is priceless!
What's one less-known thing to do in Christchurch that you love to do?
I think the cat might be a little bit out of the bag on this one, but every weekend I walk into town to grab a coffee at espresso studio by Fushoken, or as we affectionately call it "Triple shot". They've just started selling matcha and it is quite possibly the best hot matcha I've had in Christchurch so far!
For our readers wanting to try for themselves, where can they find you?
Our Christchurch CBD store on Montreal Street is open Friday from 7am-1pm and Saturday from 8:30am-12:30pm, and of course we're at the Christchurch Farmers Market every Saturday morning. We also offer corporate and private catering on weekdays!
